Ansel Adams

Ansel Easton Adams (February 20, 1902 – April 22, 1984) was an American photographer and environmentalist. His black-and-white landscape photographs of the American West, especially Yosemite National Park, have been widely reproduced on calendars, posters, and in books. With Fred Archer, Adams developed the Zone System as a way to determine proper exposure and adjust the contrast of the final print. The resulting clarity and depth characterized his photographs. Adams primarily used large-format cameras because their high resolution helped ensure sharpness in his images.

Adams was born in the Western Addition of San Francisco, California, to distinctly upper-class parents Charles Hitchcock Adams and Olive Bray Adams. He was an only child and was named after his uncle Ansel Easton.

Adams's black-and-white photographs of the West which became the foremost record of what many of the National Parks were like before tourism, and his persistent advocacy helped expand the National Park system. He used his works to promote many of the goals of the Sierra Club and of the nascent environmental movement, but always insisted that, as far as his photographs were concerned, "beauty comes first". His images are still very popular in calendars, posters, and books.

HERE ARE SOME OF THE ANSEL ADAMS BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHS FOR TRAVEL & TOURISM LOVERS

HAIKU STAIRS

The Haiku Stairs, also known as the Stairway to Heaven, is a steep hiking trail on the island of Oʻahu. Haiku Stairs is a series of galvanized-steel ship ladders that allow access for hikers to the top of Puu Keahiakahoe. At an altitude of more than 2800 feet, the top of the Stairs is some 2200 feet above the main building of the now decommissioned U.S. Coast Guard OMEGA Station and about 2,300 feet above the bottom step. Haiku Stairs is a stairways known as the stairs to the surge and has a very beautiful and very special. Haiku Stairs has stairways and ladders around 4,000 have been structured in 1942 so that the antenna can be seen from one side of the cliff, radio signals in use for the United States Navy subs as far as Tokyo shore. In 2003, this ladder is repaired at a cost of nearly 1 million US dollars, but currently there are no plans to open the stairs to public use, because it is still dangerous to climb, no sign of calling people not to climb, but most people reached there before the sunset and sunrise. Haiku Stairs has stunning views and sheer and on both sides of the Hill became one of the most memorable and most popular in the year now.

When the naval base closed in 1950, the United States Coast Guard used the site for a station of the Omega navigation system. In the mid-tahun1950, the Haiku Stairs is replaced by a piece of metal steps and by one count, the station and the trail is closed to the public in 1987. Some hikers ignore the signs not trespassing and continues to rise, contributing to the local community is worrying about the re-opening of this structure. Haiku Stairs stood the cliffs on the South side of the Valley of Haiku. In 1942 to enable antenna cable for strung from one side of the cliff above the Valley of the building to provide continuously between Wahiawa and Haiku Stairs Valley Naval Radio Station was built on the Summit of Puukeahiakahoe, an altitude of about 2,800 feet. The antenna transmitted extremely low frequency radio signals from 200,000 watt Alexanderson alternator in the center of the Haiku. The signal can reach a submarine the Navy as far as Tokyo Bay. Testers for RCA pick up signals on Long Island, and the signal also reaches India, 6,600 miles away. Haiku is a very popular once in Hawaii because every day a lot of tourists that come here. Here too there is the hotel to stay for those who tired during the climb and restaurants are also located here.

Kerala joined the likes of New York City, Denmark, Prague, Iceland, Italy and Hawaii in being described by the travel expert as a child-friendly destination ideal for the family.

"The intensity of travel in India could put you off taking a trip here with family, but Kerala is a family-friendly version, more laid back than other regions, greener, slower paced. There are also lots of national parks for elephant spotting, palm fringed beaches and boat trips along the lush canals of the backwaters," it said.

Kerala Tourism director S. Harikishore, who led the state delegation to the World Travel Mart, received the award from Lonely Planet.

Former South African cricketer Jonty Rhodes was among the thousands who visited the Kerala pavilion at the World Travel Mart. The pavilion showcased Kerala as the Home of Ayurveda.

Rhodes, who retired from international cricket in 2003, is a brand ambassador for South African Tourism.

"With the British economy registering the fastest growth in the last three years in the previous quarter, the mood at the World Travel Mart hosted by London was upbeat," said Harikishore.

Britain is the most important market for Kerala. The state recorded nearly 1.5 lakh tourist arrivals last year.

"The World Travel Mart presented us with a significant opportunity to target higher growth figures for Kerala tourism as far as foreign tourist arrivals are concerned," he added.

The Kerala delegation included 12 co-exhibitors representing the hospitality industry of the state.

Thekkady, a luxurious stay in the wild

Thekkady in Kerala, offers a great opportunity to find animal sightings in the deciduous forests along with some interesting luxury resorts...

Around 185 kms from the Kochi airport, a traveler itinerary to Kerala cannot be complete without visiting Thekkady - the popular destination for visiting the Periyar National Park. Only around a distance of 2 hours from Munnar, Thekkady has an array of luxurious resorts located in the small town. Carmelia Haven, is one of them. With its tea plantations, spice plantations, luxurious independent cottages overlooking the swimming pool in the centre of the resort as you go down from your cottage, the resort is an ideal destination to experience comfort, luxury and calm in the wild.

Periyar National Park is situated at an hour's distance from the resort and one needs to report atleast an hour before to catch the boat cruise on the Periyar lake. It is highly recommended to take the KTDC (Kerala Tourism Development Corporation) boat on the top floor or the Forest department boat again on the top floor, so that you can have a great view of the forests on either side with its flora and fauna during the monsoon.

As the boat cruise starts you realize, that the forests are dense, deciduous, evergreen and as you peep into the wilderness you realize it would be quite an opportunity for those who trek inside the Periyar National Park. While the park is famous for tigers, elephants and langurs, it is only luck if you find them! Amazing the lake has trees without branches located in the lake and you find exotic birds sitting on them as you pass by.

On our boat cruise, we found tortoises on the banks of the lake, wild boars grazing on the green fields and deer drinking water from the lake. Even as you spot these animals, you feel you might get lucky and see a pack of elephants throwing water on each other, as the guide tells you about it! With the sun beginning to set, the skies are filled with dark clouds and it starts to drizzle and the cool breeze makes you again fall in love with life! It is indeed a rejuvenating experience to enjoy the boat cruise on the Periyar National Lake. For all those who can't walk, they have rickshaws to take you to the lake, because cars are not allowed inside the park! The langurs here are very naughty and you need to be safe because they can easily take away your belongings if you are not careful.

The resort also offers Kerala ayurvedic spa and one should never avoid it even if it is expensive. The Ayurvedic massage is worth every penny that you pay as it is one of the most refreshing experiences of life. The women and men masseurs are trained and the whole body livens up once you experience the massage here. Women dressed in offwhite and gold border sarees greet you at the resort and offer you good wishes and apply tilak.

The whole experience of enjoying a holiday is about feeling at home away from home, so when you find the hospitality warm and people smiling, your holiday is made. The resorts offer Kerala cuisine - that has rasams, payasam and a variety of dosas and mendu vadas to savour from. The sambhar is also made after adding a variety of vegetables in it and some enjoy and some enjoy without the vegetables.

Thekkady with its natural splendour and the Periyar Lake is a definite must-visit for all those who dig worldly pleasures in the wild.
